About
Rep. Faircloth
Sean Faircloth is serving his third consecutive term in the Legislature,
and he also serves as House Majority Whip, an elected member of the
House Democratic leadership.
As the Whip, Faircloth is
responsible for helping to secure votes for legislative initiatives
and helping to coordinate legislative
and
floor strategy for the House of Representatives.
Faircloth graduated from the University of Notre Dame and received
his law degree from the University of California Hastings College
of the Law. A former prosecutor, Sean Faircloth began his career
in the Legislature in 1992, and served for two consecutive terms
in the Legislature.
While taking a five-year hiatus from the Legislature, Faircloth initiated,
and led to completion, the Maine Discovery Museum. Maine Discovery
Museum is a nationally recognized $4.5 million children’s museum
that helped spark Bangor’s downtown revitalization.
Faircloth returned to the House in 2002, and was re-elected in 2004
and 2006. He was named Legislator of the Year in 1995 by the National
Association of Social Workers; in 2003 by the American Academy of
Pediatrics, Maine chapter; and in 2006 by the Maine People’s
Alliance.
Much of his legislation has centered on protecting children. Faircloth
led the creation of innovative child abuse prevention programs, adoption
law reform, and anti-child pornography and anti-child sex abuse statutes.
He spearheaded the deadbeat dad child support law, which saved Maine
taxpayers over $180 million. Rep. Faircloth also authored legislation
to address obesity which led to a groundbreaking improvement in school
vending machine nutrition standards.
A proponent of research and development since the early 1990s, Faircloth
authored the state’s first research and development tax credit.
In another economic development measure, Faircloth authored legislation
to create a plan to encourage the lucrative bird trail and wildlife
tourism market.
In 2006 he was chosen as a Flemming Fellow based on his
significant policy success. He is an assistant professor of justice
studies at University College Bangor.
In ten years of legislative service, Rep. Faircloth has led over
thirty bills to become law, most addressing justice issues and children’s
issues.
